Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf

I love meatloaf, it is a simple yet deliciously filling dinner especially in the colder weather. We do s few different types of meatloaves, but this is a current favorite. The wonderful flavor of a Philly Cheeseteak in meatloaf form. Also try my Philly Cheesesteak recipe .

For those familar with the proper way to order a cheesesteak in Philly I am doing the meatloaf as provolone wit (for those unfamiliar that is provolone cheese with onions). To make this a little more hearty I am adding mushrooms and green peppers also.

First step is to give a medium sweet onion, and small green bell pepper and give them a nice medium chop (smaller than a rough chop but not as small as a large dice). You will also need to take about a cup of sliced mushrooms and give them a chop so they are the same size as your chopped onions and peppers. Saute the veggies with a tablespoon of butter making sure to season the veggies with salt and pepper. You only want to get them until tender.

In large bowl combine 1.5 lb lean ground beef, 1 cup bread crumbs, 1 large egg, 1/2 cup of milk, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon pepper, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon Montreal steak seasoning, and all of the veggies and the reminants of the butter from the bottom of the saute pan. Here is the hardest part of making a meatloaf, you need to make sure everything is completely combined but you don’t want to over work the meat as you mix everything.

I like the rake method. Take your non-dominant hand (ie if your right handed use your left hand, spread your fingers like a garden rake and use that to mix the ingredients.

Next in a greased 9×5 loaf pan and half the meatloaf mixture then top with 4 slices of provolone.

Cover the cheese with the remaining meatloaf mixture. Place the filled loaf pan in a oven preheated to 350.

Bake for 30 minutes allowing the top to get browned and crunchy.

Cover the top of the baked meatloaf with more slices of provolone, return switch to broil just long enough to melt and begin to brown.


  • 1.5 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Montreal steak seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small green bell pepper
  • 1 medium sweet onion
  • 8 slices of provolone


  1. preheat oven to 350
  2. give onion and pepper a medium chop and cut the sliced mushroom to the same size
  3. saute the veggies with the butter until tender
  4. combine the veggies and the rest of the ingredients (except the cheese)
  5. press half the mixture into the bottom of a 9×5 meatloaf pan
  6. top with 4 slices of cheese
  7. add remaining meatloaf mixture
  8. bake at 350 for 30 minutes
  9. switch oven to broil and top the meatloaf with remaining slices of cheese
  10. broil until cheese melts and begins to brown
  11. slice and serve
